Fosfomycin Trometamol
Fosfomycin trometamol is a synthetic, broad-spectrum bactericidal antibiotic. It acts by inhibiting the first step of bacterial cell wall synthesis, specifically blocking the synthesis of peptidoglycan. It is highly active against Gram-negative and Gram-positive uropathogens, including E. coli, Proteus, Klebsiella, and Enterococcus species. It is uniquely formulated as a single-dose treatment due to its rapid absorption and prolonged, high concentrations in urine.
Dosage by Body Weight
For acute uncomplicated cystitis in female patients aged 12 years and older, the standard dose is one single 3 g sachet dissolved in a glass of water. It should be taken on an empty stomach (either 1 hour before or 2 to 3 hours after a meal), preferably at bedtime after emptying the bladder. Not routinely recommended for children under 12 years of age or weighing less than 50 kg.
