Tramadol

Tramadol is a synthetic, centrally acting opioid analgesic used to treat moderate to moderately severe pain. It exerts its effect by binding to mu-opioid receptors and weakly inhibiting the reuptake of norepinephrine and serotonin.

Dosage by Body Weight

For adults, the typical starting dose is 25 to 50 mg every 4 to 6 hours as needed for pain, up to a maximum of 400 mg per day. Extended-release formulations are administered once daily. It is contraindicated in children under 12 years of age and contraindicated for post-operative pain management in children under 18 years who have undergone tonsillectomy and/or adenoidectomy.
