Timolol Maleate
Timolol Maleate is a non-selective beta-adrenergic receptor blocker. When applied topically as eye drops, it reduces elevated and normal intraocular pressure by decreasing the production of aqueous humor. In oral tablet form, it blocks beta-receptors to reduce cardiac output and lower systemic blood pressure.
Dosage by Body Weight
Ophthalmic: Typically 1 drop of 0.25% or 0.5% solution in the affected eye(s) once or twice daily. Oral: Typically 10 mg taken 1 to 2 times daily, adjusted according to patient response. Pediatric dosing is not standardized by body weight and is highly restricted due to systemic absorption risks.
- Body Weight
- Below 5 kg
- Dose
- Not recommended
- Frequency
- Avoid use
- Tracking Notes
- Safety and efficacy in neonates and young infants have not been established. High risk of systemic beta-blockade, apnea, and bradycardia.
- Body Weight
- 5-7 kg
- Dose
- Not routinely recommended
- Frequency
- Use only if prescribed
- Tracking Notes
- Extremely high risk of systemic absorption. If essential, use lowest concentration (0.25%) under strict medical supervision.
- Body Weight
- 8-10 kg
- Dose
- Not routinely recommended
- Frequency
- Use only if prescribed
- Tracking Notes
- Monitor heart rate and breathing closely. Apply pressure to the lacrimal sac (inner corner of the eye) for 1-2 minutes after instillation to minimize systemic absorption.
- Body Weight
- 11-15 kg
- Dose
- Specialist determined
- Frequency
- As directed by physician
- Tracking Notes
- Use with extreme caution. Ophthalmic beta-blockers must be carefully managed by a pediatric ophthalmologist.
- Body Weight
- 16-20 kg
- Dose
- Specialist determined
- Frequency
- As directed by physician
- Tracking Notes
- Perform nasolacrimal occlusion immediately after eye drop administration to reduce systemic side effects.

Formulation
Purpose
Used primarily to lower pressure inside the eye (intraocular pressure) in patients with open-angle glaucoma or ocular hypertension. In oral tablet form, it is used to treat high blood pressure (hypertension), prevent migraine headaches, and decrease the risk of death after a heart attack.
