Symla
Symla contains Lamotrigine, an antiepileptic drug (AED) of the phenyltriazine class. It is believed to act by inhibiting voltage-sensitive sodium channels, thereby stabilizing neuronal membranes and regulating the release of excitatory neurotransmitters like glutamate. It is used both to manage epilepsy and as a mood stabilizer in bipolar disorder.
Dosage by Body Weight
Dosage must be strictly individualized. It requires a slow, gradual escalation (titration) over several weeks to minimize the risk of developing a serious, potentially life-threatening rash (such as Stevens-Johnson syndrome). Do not stop taking this medication abruptly.
- Body Weight
- Below 5 kg
- Dose
- Not routinely recommended
- Frequency
- Use only if strictly prescribed
- Tracking Notes
- Safety and effectiveness in infants weighing less than 5 kg have not been established.
- Body Weight
- 5-7 kg
- Dose
- Highly individualized titration (typically starting very low, e.g., 0.15 to 2 mg/kg/day)
- Frequency
- Once daily or divided into two doses
- Tracking Notes
- Dosing depends heavily on concurrent medications, particularly if co-administered with enzyme-inhibiting drugs like Valproate or enzyme-inducing drugs.
- Body Weight
- 8-10 kg
- Dose
- Individually titrated based on clinical response and co-medications
- Frequency
- Once daily or divided into two doses
- Tracking Notes
- Adherence to the gradual titration schedule is critical to prevent severe dermatological side effects.
- Body Weight
- 11-15 kg
- Dose
- Individually titrated based on body weight and concomitant drugs
- Frequency
- Once daily or divided into two doses
- Tracking Notes
- Monitor closely for skin rashes, fever, or lymphadenopathy, especially during the first 8 weeks of therapy.
- Body Weight
- 16-20 kg
- Dose
- Individually titrated based on body weight and concomitant drugs
- Frequency
- Once daily or divided into two doses
- Tracking Notes
- Strictly follow the step-by-step dose escalation schedule provided by your physician.
