Theoped

Theoped is a combination medication containing theophylline and ephedrine hydrochloride. Theophylline is a methylxanthine bronchodilator that relaxes the smooth muscle of the bronchial airways. Ephedrine is a sympathomimetic amine that stimulates alpha and beta-adrenergic receptors, causing bronchodilation and reducing mucosal congestion. Together, they assist in keeping the airways open during chronic respiratory conditions.

Dosage by Body Weight

Typically administered orally. Adults usually take 1 tablet every 6 to 8 hours, up to a maximum of 4 tablets in 24 hours. Dosage must be individualized, especially because of the narrow therapeutic index of theophylline and the cardiac stimulating effects of ephedrine. Pediatric dosing must be strictly supervised by a physician.
