Garamycin

Garamycin is an aminoglycoside antibiotic containing Gentamicin. It works by inhibiting bacterial protein synthesis, making it highly effective against severe Gram-negative infections. Due to potential risks of ototoxicity and nephrotoxicity, therapy requires careful monitoring of renal function and serum drug levels.

Dosage by Body Weight

Dosage must be highly individualized based on body weight, renal function, and serum drug concentration levels. Typically administered via intramuscular (IM) or intravenous (IV) injection, or applied topically for skin/eye infections.

  1. Body Weight
    Below 5 kg
    Dose
    2.5 mg/kg per dose
    Frequency
    Every 12 to 24 hours
    Tracking Notes
Primarily for neonates; dose interval depends heavily on gestational and post-natal age. Serum level monitoring is mandatory.
  2. Body Weight
    5-7 kg
    Dose
10 mg to 17.5 mg per dose (calculated at 2 to 2.5 mg/kg)
    Frequency
    Every 8 hours
    Tracking Notes
Adjust dosage interval in patients with renal impairment. Monitor kidney function.
  3. Body Weight
    8-10 kg
    Dose
16 mg to 25 mg per dose (calculated at 2 to 2.5 mg/kg)
    Frequency
    Every 8 hours
    Tracking Notes
Maintain adequate hydration during therapy to minimize renal toxicity risk.
  4. Body Weight
    11-15 kg
    Dose
22 mg to 37.5 mg per dose (calculated at 2 to 2.5 mg/kg)
    Frequency
    Every 8 hours
    Tracking Notes
Perform regular audiometric testing if therapy extends beyond 7-10 days.
  5. Body Weight
    16-20 kg
    Dose
32 mg to 50 mg per dose (calculated at 2 to 2.5 mg/kg)
    Frequency
    Every 8 hours
    Tracking Notes
Ensure peak serum concentrations do not exceed 10 mcg/mL and trough concentrations remain below 2 mcg/mL.
