Cabergoline

Cabergoline is an ergot derivative and a potent, long-acting dopamine receptor agonist with high affinity for D2 receptors. By stimulating dopamine D2 receptors in the pituitary gland, it directly inhibits the secretion of prolactin, a hormone that stimulates milk production and regulates reproductive functions.

Dosage by Body Weight

The standard starting dose for hyperprolactinemia is 0.25 mg twice weekly. The dosage may be increased by 0.25 mg twice weekly up to a maximum of 1 mg twice weekly, depending on the patient's serum prolactin levels. Dose increases should not occur more rapidly than every 4 weeks. It is best taken with food to reduce potential side effects like nausea.
