Variquel
Variquel contains terlipressin, a synthetic vasopressin analogue that acts as a vasoconstrictor. It is primarily used in emergency settings to reduce pressure in the portal venous system, controlling bleeding from dilated veins in the esophagus (esophageal varices) and improving kidney function in patients with type 1 hepatorenal syndrome.
Dosage by Body Weight
Strictly for intravenous use in a hospital setting by qualified healthcare professionals. The standard adult dose for bleeding esophageal varices is 1 to 2 mg terlipressin acetate initially, followed by 1 to 2 mg every 4 to 6 hours until bleeding is controlled. For hepatorenal syndrome, the starting dose is typically 0.5 to 1 mg every 6 hours.
