Rifamate

Rifamate is a combination prescription antibiotic containing rifampin and isoniazid. It is indicated for the treatment of active tuberculosis (TB). Rifampin acts by inhibiting bacterial RNA synthesis, while isoniazid inhibits the synthesis of mycolic acids, disrupting the bacterial cell wall. Combining these two drugs in one capsule helps improve compliance and reduces the risk of drug-resistant TB strains developing.

Dosage by Body Weight

The standard adult dosage is 2 capsules taken orally once daily, either 1 hour before or 2 hours after a meal. Rifamate is not recommended for patients weighing less than 45 kg (100 lbs) or pediatric patients because the fixed-dose combination does not allow for individual dose adjustments.
