Peyona

Peyona is a central nervous system stimulant containing caffeine citrate. It is used to treat primary apnea, a condition where premature infants temporarily stop breathing for 20 seconds or more, by stimulating the respiratory center in the brain.

Dosage by Body Weight

Treatment must be initiated under the supervision of a physician experienced in neonatal intensive care. A loading dose of 20 mg/kg body weight is administered via slow intravenous infusion. A maintenance dose of 5 mg/kg body weight is administered orally or intravenously every 24 hours starting 24 hours after the loading dose.
