Mycobutin
Mycobutin (rifabutin) is a semi-synthetic ansamycin antibiotic. It is primarily indicated for the prevention of disseminated Mycobacterium avium complex (MAC) disease in patients with advanced HIV infection. It works by inhibiting DNA-dependent RNA polymerase in susceptible bacterial strains, blocking protein synthesis.
Dosage by Body Weight
For adult MAC prophylaxis, the recommended dose is 300 mg once daily. For treatment regimens (such as TB or MAC), doses range from 150 mg to 300 mg daily in combination with other antituberculosis or antibacterial drugs. Pediatric dosing is typically 5 mg/kg daily up to 300 mg. Dosages must be adjusted when co-administered with CYP3A4 inhibitors (like protease inhibitors) or inducers. Can be taken with food to reduce gastrointestinal discomfort.
