Fosrenol

Fosrenol (lanthanum carbonate) is a phosphate binder. When taken with meals, it binds to dietary phosphorus in the gastrointestinal tract, preventing its absorption into the body and helping to maintain lower serum phosphorus levels in patients with chronic kidney disease on dialysis.

Dosage by Body Weight

The recommended initial total daily dose for adults is 1,500 mg, divided and taken with or immediately after meals. The dose should be titrated every 2 to 3 weeks in increments of 750 mg per day until an acceptable serum phosphorus level is reached. Chewable tablets must be chewed completely before swallowing to prevent serious gastrointestinal complications.
