Fluocinonide

Fluocinonide is a high-potency (Group II) or ultra-high potency (Group I, for 0.1% formulations) topical corticosteroid. It works by depressing the formation, release, and activity of endogenous chemical mediators of inflammation.

Dosage by Body Weight

Apply a thin film to the affected area 2 to 4 times daily for 0.05% formulations, or once daily for 0.1% formulations. Rub in gently. Do not use for more than 2 consecutive weeks, and do not exceed 50 grams per week of the 0.1% cream or 60 grams per week of the 0.05% formulations. Avoid application to the face, groin, or axillae.

    Tracking Notes
High potency topical steroids pose a significant risk of systemic absorption, adrenal suppression, and Cushing's syndrome in infants.
  2. Body Weight
    5-7 kg
    Dose
    Contraindicated / Not recommended

    Do not use
    Tracking Notes
Extremely high risk of systemic side effects. Use lower-potency steroids if absolutely necessary and under specialist supervision.
  3. Body Weight
    8-10 kg
    Dose
    Not routinely recommended
    Frequency
Use only if prescribed by a specialist
    Tracking Notes
Safety and efficacy have not been established in pediatric patients under 12 years of age for high-potency formulations.
  4. Body Weight
    11-15 kg
    Dose
    Not recommended
    Frequency
    Consult pediatric dermatologist
    Tracking Notes
If used, apply the smallest amount possible for the shortest duration. Do not use occlusive dressings (including diapers or plastic pants).
  5. Body Weight
    16-20 kg
    Dose
Apply thin film sparingly to limited areas
    Frequency
    Once daily, maximum 5-7 days
