Theolair

Theolair contains theophylline, a methylxanthine bronchodilator. It works by relaxing the smooth muscles of the bronchial airways and pulmonary blood vessels, thereby easing breathing difficulties and reducing the lungs' response to irritants.

Dosage by Body Weight

Dosage must be highly individualized. It is typically determined by clinical response and serum theophylline concentration measurements. It is crucial to swallow extended-release tablets whole and not crush or chew them.

  1. Body Weight
    Below 5 kg
    Dose
    Not routinely recommended
    Frequency
Use only under strict specialist supervision
    Tracking Notes
Clearance is extremely variable and decreased in neonates and young infants. Serum concentration monitoring is mandatory.
  2. Body Weight
    5-7 kg
    Dose
    10 to 12 mg/kg/day starting dose
    Frequency
Divided every 8 to 12 hours depending on formulation
    Tracking Notes
Requires careful titration. Serum monitoring recommended to maintain therapeutic levels.
  3. Body Weight
    8-10 kg
    Dose
    12 to 14 mg/kg/day starting dose
    Frequency
Divided every 8 to 12 hours depending on formulation
    Tracking Notes
Adjustment must be guided by peak serum theophylline concentrations.
  4. Body Weight
    11-15 kg
    Dose
    13 to 16 mg/kg/day starting dose
    Frequency
Divided every 8 to 12 hours depending on formulation
    Tracking Notes
Do not exceed standard starting maximums without measuring blood concentrations.
  5. Body Weight
    16-20 kg
    Dose
    13 to 16 mg/kg/day starting dose
    Frequency
Divided every 8 to 12 hours depending on formulation
