Purodigin

Purodigin is a cardiac glycoside medication containing digitoxin, derived from the foxglove plant (Digitalis purpurea). It increases the force of myocardial contraction (positive inotropic effect) and decreases heart rate (negative chronotropic effect). Due to its exceptionally long half-life (typically 5 to 7 days) and narrow therapeutic index, it has largely been replaced in modern medicine by digoxin, which is cleared more rapidly from the body.

Dosage by Body Weight

Dosage must be highly individualized by a physician based on clinical response, body weight, renal and hepatic function, and serum drug levels. Digitoxin therapy usually begins with a loading (digitalizing) dose followed by a daily maintenance dose. Close monitoring for signs of digitalis toxicity (such as nausea, vomiting, visual disturbances, or arrhythmias) is required.
