Misoprostol is a synthetic prostaglandin E1 analog that protects the gastric mucosa by inhibiting basal and nocturnal gastric acid secretion, and by increasing bicarbonate and mucus production. It also causes uterine contractions and is widely used in obstetric and gynecological procedures.
