Kemicetine Suspension
Kemicetine Suspension is a broad-spectrum, primarily bacteriostatic antibiotic containing Chloramphenicol palmitate. It is highly effective against a wide range of Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria. Due to the risk of serious adverse effects, particularly bone marrow depression (including irreversible aplastic anemia) and Grey Baby Syndrome in neonates, its clinical use is highly restricted and requires close hematological monitoring.
Dosage by Body Weight
The standard pediatric dose of Chloramphenicol is 50 mg/kg/day divided into 4 equal doses administered every 6 hours. For severe infections like meningitis, up to 100 mg/kg/day may be used initially under strict medical supervision. Dosage calculations below are based on the standard suspension strength of 125 mg / 5 mL.
- Body Weight
- Below 5 kg
- Dose
- Not routinely recommended / 1.25 mL (31.25 mg) to 2.5 mL (62.5 mg) per day maximum
- Frequency
- Divided into 2 to 4 doses daily
- Tracking Notes
- Use with extreme caution in neonates and infants under 2 weeks due to the high risk of Grey Baby Syndrome. Blood concentration monitoring is highly recommended.
- Body Weight
- 5-7 kg
- Dose
- 2.5 mL to 3.5 mL (62.5 mg to 87.5 mg)
- Frequency
- Every 6 hours (4 times a day)
- Tracking Notes
- Total daily dose should not exceed 250 mg to 350 mg. Strictly monitor complete blood counts.
- Body Weight
- 8-10 kg
- Dose
- 4 mL to 5 mL (100 mg to 125 mg)
- Frequency
- Every 6 hours (4 times a day)
- Tracking Notes
- Ensure adequate hydration. Therapy duration should be kept as short as clinically possible.
- Body Weight
- 11-15 kg
- Dose
- 5.5 mL to 7.5 mL (137.5 mg to 187.5 mg)
- Frequency
- Every 6 hours (4 times a day)
- Tracking Notes
- Administer on an empty stomach (1 hour before or 2 hours after meals) for optimal absorption.
- Body Weight
- 16-20 kg
- Dose
- 8 mL to 10 mL (200 mg to 250 mg)
- Frequency
- Every 6 hours (4 times a day)
- Tracking Notes
- Do not exceed the prescribed duration. Watch for signs of sore throat, fever, pale skin, or unusual bruising.
