Gymnema Sylvestre
Gymnema sylvestre is a perennial woody vine native to tropical regions of Asia, Africa, and Australia. Known historically in Ayurvedic medicine as 'Gurmar' (the destroyer of sugar), its active constituents, gymnemic acids, interact with taste receptors on the tongue to temporarily suppress the taste of sweetness. It is also believed to slow glucose absorption in the intestines and support insulin production by promoting the health of pancreatic islet cells.
Dosage by Body Weight
For adults, the typical dosage of standardized extract (standardized to 25-75% gymnemic acids) is 200 mg to 400 mg taken one to two times daily, usually 15-30 minutes before meals. It is not recommended for children, pregnant, or lactating women without direct medical supervision. Monitor blood glucose closely if co-administered with prescription antidiabetic medications to avoid hypoglycemia.
