Betamethasone Dipropionate
Betamethasone dipropionate is a high-potency synthetic corticosteroid. It possesses anti-inflammatory, antipruritic, and vasoconstrictive properties. It works by suppressing the immune response and reducing inflammatory mediators in the skin. Because of its high potency, topical application over large surface areas or for extended periods can lead to systemic absorption and potential hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis suppression.
Dosage by Body Weight
Apply a thin layer of cream, ointment, or lotion to the affected skin area once or twice daily. Rub in gently. Do not use for more than 2 consecutive weeks, and do not exceed 50g per week of high-potency formulations unless directed by a healthcare provider. Do not cover with occlusive dressings. Avoid application to the face, underarms, or groin area.
- Body Weight
- Below 5 kg
- Dose
- Contraindicated / Not recommended
- Frequency
- Do not use
- Tracking Notes
- Pediatric patients are highly susceptible to systemic toxicity, HPA axis suppression, and Cushing's syndrome due to a larger skin surface area to body weight ratio.
- Body Weight
- 5-7 kg
- Dose
- Contraindicated / Not recommended
- Frequency
- Do not use
- Tracking Notes
- Safety and efficacy have not been established in infants and very young children. High risk of systemic corticosteroid absorption.
- Body Weight
- 8-10 kg

- Not routinely recommended
- Frequency
- Consult a pediatric specialist

- 11-15 kg
- Dose
- Use with extreme caution

- Once daily or less, under strict supervision
- Tracking Notes
- Apply the smallest possible amount only to the affected area. Avoid long-term therapy (more than 5-7 days) and do not use tight-fitting diapers or plastic pants over treated areas.
- Body Weight
- 16-20 kg
- Dose
- Use with extreme caution
