Adenoscan
Adenoscan is an intravenous drug containing adenosine, an endogenous nucleoside that acts as a potent vasodilator in most vascular beds. It helps dilate the coronary arteries, simulating the physiological effects of exercise to assist in detecting coronary artery disease during cardiac imaging.
Dosage by Body Weight
The standard adult dose is 140 mcg/kg/min administered as a continuous peripheral intravenous infusion over a period of 6 minutes (total dose of 0.84 mg/kg). Pediatric dosing safety and efficacy have not been established; if used, it requires highly specialized calculation and administration.
- Body Weight
- Below 5 kg
- Dose
- Not routinely recommended
- Frequency
- Use only if prescribed under strict specialist supervision
- Tracking Notes
- Safety and effectiveness in pediatric patients have not been established. Dose must be based on precise weight-based calculation (140 mcg/kg/min).
- Body Weight
- 5-7 kg
- Dose
- 4.2 mg to 5.88 mg total dose (infused at 140 mcg/kg/min)
- Frequency
- Single continuous infusion over 6 minutes
- Tracking Notes
- Must use a controlled infusion pump. Continuous ECG and hemodynamic monitoring are required.
- Body Weight
- 8-10 kg
- Dose
- 6.72 mg to 8.4 mg total dose (infused at 140 mcg/kg/min)
- Frequency
- Single continuous infusion over 6 minutes
- Tracking Notes
- Administered via a large peripheral vein. Ensure emergency resuscitation equipment is immediately available.
- Body Weight
- 11-15 kg
- Dose
- 9.24 mg to 12.6 mg total dose (infused at 140 mcg/kg/min)
- Frequency
- Single continuous infusion over 6 minutes
- Tracking Notes
- Infuse thallium-201 or other imaging agent at the midpoint (3-minute mark) of the Adenoscan infusion.
- Body Weight
- 16-20 kg
- Dose
- 13.44 mg to 16.8 mg total dose (infused at 140 mcg/kg/min)
- Frequency
- Single continuous infusion over 6 minutes
- Tracking Notes
- Dose is strictly calculated based on actual body weight. Monitor closely for bronchospasm, chest pain, or severe hypotension.
